Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

There are so many different types of nurse practitioners that a person could be. A psychiatric nurse practitioner is just a bit different. They are also referred to as mental health nurse practitioners. They are considered advanced practice registered nurses that provide a wide spectrum of psychiatric care, diagnosing, assessing, and managing. They do this to prevent and treat mental disorders and mental health problems. You can find these types of nurse practitioners in hospitals and even clinics. There’s a lot of education needed in order to become a psychiatric nurse practitioner. What people need that are suffering from mental illnesses still exist today, and that is why a mental health nurse can fulfill those needs.
As a mental health nurse, they usually conduct research and work with patients as well as their families to enhance mental health. There is so much that can be learned from mental health and illnesses alone. They work with children, adolescents, adults, and older people in a variety of different settings. These settings can be in community mental health clinics, public health departments, hospitals, businesses, physician offices, health maintenance organizations, government facilities, independent nurse practitioner offices, and school of nursing. There are so many settings that they work in. That is why it is usually easy for a mental health nurse to find a job, because they have so many different options of where to go.

There’s a lot of education that is needed in order to become a mental health nurse. You can start off by usually getting an undergraduate degree in nursing. You can advance from there. You’ll need to become a registered nurse before you can become a mental health practitioner. There are many certifications and licenses that you’ll need in order to start your career. It all goes off of state regulations. You have to follow them all, and it does involve many different tests and things of that nature that you must take and pass. This is a field that continues to grow, and is always open for new individuals waiting to further their career in the mental health field.
